What’s wrong with the world when sports figures get away with everything they do?
OK. It’s been almost a week since Letrell Sprewell decided it
was within the bounds of polite society to choke and pummel his coach. I
really don’t care why he thought it was all right. He got what he deserved
when the team fired him and the NBA suspended him for a year. In fact I
think he got off light! He *should* have been kicked out of the sport for
life.
##Mayor Willie Brown
Proving that he’s as much an ass and as incompetant as I always thought he
was, Mr. Brown is quoted recently in the paper saying that perhaps the
coach “deserved to be hit.” I’m sorry Mr. Brown, but there’s *nothing*
that the coach could have *said*, absolutely nothing, that means he
deserves to be hit by one of his players. Quoting from one of my favorite
books, “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetant.”
##Sports leagues as corporations
The various professional sports leagues should be thought of simply as a
corporation. And just like any other corporation they have the right to
hire and fire as they see fit according to what they believe is best for the corporation (within the limits of the law). In other words, they have
the right to say “Letrell Sprewell isn’t the type of player we want in our
league, so he can’t be in it.”
There are those that would say that Mr. Sprewell has a *right* to
play. To that I say that he does **not** have the right to play, but
rather has the right to *pursue* playing professional basketball.
Part of that pursuit is to behave in such a way that he can be a part of a
team.
##Here’s my list
As you may have gathered by this point, I think Mr. Sprewell should have
been kicked out of the NBA for life. That may sound kind of harsh, but
remember, Pete Rose got kicked out of baseball for life for gambling. And
they were never able to show that he gambled on his own team, or that the
gambling affected his play as a player, or his decisions as a manager. If
it’s good enough for Pete, it’s good enough for Letrell.
So, in
the interest of fair play, here’s my list of others that *should*
have been kicked out of their respective sports over the last few years.
make a living, and live a life. But that life shouldn’t be priviledged. In
any case, he comes back and then bites the ear off Evander Hollyfield! The
boxing commissions slapped his wrist and gave him a small fine! If I bit
someone’s ear off I’d be in jail.
