OSX a Threat to Linux?

Mac OS X could put the squeeze on Linux.

…Linux recently got a new round of thrashing from another competitor to Linux on the desktop: Mac OS X. How so? At its core Mac OS X runs a version of Unix called BSD (Berkeley Standard Distribution). Linux is, of course, also based on the Unix tradition. According to ComputerUser this means that Mac OS X and Linux could appeal to many of the same users.

That’s the way that I see it. OSX gives UNIX what it’s needed for a long time: a fully integrated desktop environment with millions of users and thousands of commercial applications.

Perhaps the open source Linux guys should consider working on the Darwin code base?

Clones Sets a New Record!

All I can say is that the Force is with him!

George Lucas and 20th Century Fox may not have expected to shatter any records with the latest installment of the most popular franchise in movie history, but that’s exactly what they did.

Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones blasted off with $183 million from its unprecedented worldwide launch over the weekend ending May 19, while Spider-Man, About a Boy and others not only survived but thrived under the shadow of the digital epic.

Even with the negative publicity, nothing seems to be able to halt the Star Wars Empire.

Woods Keeps Streak Alive

Tiger wins another playoff to defend the Deutsche Bank Open.

Tiger Woods parred the third sudden-death playoff hole to beat Colin Montgomerie on Monday and win the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open for the second year in a row.

He’s won 3 out of the last 4 tournaments he’s entered including the [[Masters]]. Anyone wanna take a bet on the [[U. S. Open]]?

Mark Purdy Has Some Perspective on the Shark’s Loss

The San Jose Sharks are not yet the Boston Red Sox of hockey. But the down payment has been made.

The Red Sox, of course, have gone since 1918 without winning a World Series. And in the NHL, the St. Louis Blues have reached the playoffs the past 23 years without once reaching the finals. In other words, the local paying hockey customers are still minor leaguers in the despair and suffering department.

Ain’t that the truth. But to be this close and not make it… it feels like it did when we lost to Toronto in the second round that first playoff season.

Oh well… there’s always next year.

Required to Pay For Windows?

Microsoft has come up with another novel way to make its software compulsory – an annual subscription licensing system for schools where you have to pay for all of the computers you’re using, even if you don’t want them to run the Microsoft software you’r

###Is the Judge Paying Attention?

This includes Macs, and although the Ts & Cs of the agreement don’t make it entirely clear what you’re supposed to do with the Windows upgrades you end up buying for these machines, we bet putting them on eBay isn’t a recommended option.

Hopefully, the judge in the Microsoft Antitrust trial is paying attention to how blatantly Microsoft is thumbing its nose at the entire world daring us to take action.

And if you’re kidding yourself it’s impossible to top getting people to pay for software they don’t want to run on Intel boxes, and for software they can’t run on Apple boxes, check out the Microsoft UK Campus Agreement. This has you paying for software for people who don’t even have computers.

Disgusting.
