Pedestrian Wins Out over Art

The Writers Guild of America took the safe road.

I don’t get this one at all. Somehow the Writers Guild of America gave the Best Adapted Screenplay award to [[A Beautiful Mind]] instead of [[The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring]]. How can this possibly be?

I’ve seen both films, and Mind is a straight forward adaptation that, although interesting, is quite pedestrian. On the other hand, Fellowship is a monumental undertaking that takes risks and isn’t afraid to soar.

This is usually a prelude to the same award at the Oscars, and if so, I say shame on you to the writers guild.
