More Outlining stuff…

So, I’m playing around more with the OPML Editor using it to outline the writing in this blog, and I’m really liking the experience of using it to maintain the blog. There’s just a couple of things that are bugging me:

  • The rendering of the outline to the page could be better (I’ll work on that myself)
  • The actual suite of functionality to support outlining metaweblog sites is a little weak (I’ll work on that also)

It’s been a while since I’ve done the [[Frontier]] scripting thing. This should be fun.

The experience of writing in the outliner is much more like writing in a diary than other tools I’ve used. Everything I’ve written is visible… it’s not separated by story or anyting. Click and write… very cool.

Short Timer

Well, I’ve officially hit short timer status at my current job. I’ve accepted a job at [The MathWorks](http://www.mathworks.com/) and start on March 31st.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I’ve only been at my current job for a year, and I’m not used to switching jobs that quickly. I feel like I’m leaving my friends here high and dry. However, you gotta do what’s right for you, and right now, it’s not right for me here.

Trying something new with OPML

Well, I’ve been playing with the OPML editor from blog-god Dave Winer. It turns out that there’s a package that speaks the metaweblog api. CarneyWeb speaks metaweblog also. So, I’m trying to get this working with CarneyWeb…. stay tuned.

First thing to check… do new outline lines become paragraphs in the weblog? Check.

For those of you that don’t know, check out the [[Why did I write Vanila?]] page. CarneyWeb started as a [[Frontier]] page and only stopped because [[Frontier]] stopped being free (it was more of a hobby and technology exploration than anything else… I couldn’t see paying for however it was maintained). I’m glad I made the switch… I learned PHP and MySQL in the process, but it’s gonna be a lot of fun being able to manage the blog on CarneyWeb with an outliner again! Time to start wiping the dust of the neurons in my brain that speak UserTalk!

It’s like coming home again.

She’s Got Beauty, AND Brains

[Salma Hayek](http://www.quotationspage.com/mqotd.html:) “People often say that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ and I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder. This empowers us to find beauty in places where others have not dared to look, including inside ourselves.”

That’s a wonderful thought.

Sports Hybrid, Built by Kids, Runs on Soybeans, Zero-to-60 in 4 Seconds

soybean_car.jpg[Gizmodo](http://us.gizmodo.com/:)

The top auto designers in Detroit have been slam-dunked by a group of high school kids from Philadelphia who built the K-1 Attack Hybrid, a sports car that gets 50 miles per gallon and can go from zero to 60 in four seconds. During auto shop class, the group took a Honda Accord chassis, a Volkswagen turbo diesel engine and a 200hp electric motor, and put together a hybrid electric/biomass car that runs on soybeans. Now the car has won a race and is getting big-time press coverage all over the U.S.

The kicker? It beats the gas mileage/performance ratio of any production vehicle on the market today. It’s been a bad news week for the U.S. auto industry: First, American automakers aren’t occupying any of the top ten slots in Consumer Reports’ recommended vehicles this year, and now this? Wake up, Detroit!

Now… the question is, if high school kids can give us a cool car that gets great gas mileage and runs on replenishable fuel source, what can’t the car companies?

Might it have something to do with oil companies controlling our entire economy?
