Driving in New England

So, I’m driving to work this morning. It’s early. It’s dark. There’s ice on the road, but not much traffic. I’m on a state highway coming into the center of a town. As I approach an intersection (that I don’t have a stop sign for), there’s a woman waiting to turn left. As I pass her by, she gives me the middle finger for not stopping to let her turn. And so begings my morning rant.

When did drivers in New England decide that because they want the right of way, they should have the right of way, and if someone doesn’t yield they’re some sort of jerk?

Let’s remember something: while driving, the right of way is something that you either have or you don’t. It’s not something that you TAKE. If you already have it, you can choose to give up, but you are under no obligation to do so, and not doing so doesn’t make it ok to treat you as some sort of vermin.

If you’re in that much of a hurry that you need to break the rules of the road, or that you expect others to treat you as some some sort of royalty and clear a path for you so you can get to where you’re going, leave a few minutes earlier and give the rest of us a break. You are not that important. Neither am I. This is the stuff out of which road rage is hatched, nurtured and eventually released in obscene gestures, or worse.

While I’m at it, let’s talk about turning left while at a light. You don’t have the right of way here either. When the light turns green, it’s not your turn. The people going straight in the other direction have the right of way. I don’t care how much of a hurry you’re in, or if you’re worried that you might not get to turn left… please go re-read the driver’s handbook!

One more thing… if you’re in a left turn lane, and there’s more than one left turn lane, and you’re not in the one that’s furthest to the left, don’t make a U-turn. If I’m in that furthest to the left lane, I’ll probably run you off the road. See…. my blood is boiling just thinking about it, and road rage could follow.

If we all were just a little bit more considerate and obeyed the rules of the road, the world would be a better place.

Can’t we all just get along? [[:-)]]

New B5 Movies

A couple of months ago I got the DVD with the new [[B5]] movies, and I hadn’t watched them until now. I’ll do a full review of each later (keep an eye out here), but I have a few thoughts:

  • Knowing that the original sets aren’t around anymore, and most of the original computer animations are gone, how the hell did they manager to recreate things so well?!?
  • G’Kar and Franklin, beyond the rim. [[B5]] fans will understand what that means. Andreas and Richard, you will be missed.
  • I’m not sure I liked the second movie that much… too much validation of religion… still have to think about it.

Overall, it’s an excellent effort. I can’t wait for the next set, or, even better, a theatrical movie.

Vick’s Vapor

Michael Vick to judge: ‘I am not the beast’. Disgraced former NFL star Michael Vick declared that “I am not the bad person or the beast I’ve been made out to be” in a letter to a judge asking for leniency.

Yeah, right. I’m sorry Michael, you did do those things, and you didn’t give a damn. The sentence seems about right to me.

Good luck.

Buffett, Clinton: Keep estate tax

From [CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/?eref=rss_topstories:)

Hillary Rodham Clinton argued Tuesday for keeping the inheritance tax in place, saying it is a key to ensuring the United States remains a meritocracy.

Uhh….. is it even possible to twist that statement to the point where it makes sense? Let’s see.

The estate tax has been historically part of our very fundamental belief that we should have a meritocracy, that we do not want a system – where we expect people to make it on their own – to be, over time, dominated by inherited wealth… That we do believe that people should have to get out there and make their way, to a great extent.

Oh. I see. It’s the government’s job to take away the money that I’ve earned over the course of my life because my children aren’t deserving. Talk about social engineering! This is my basic problem with the Democrats… they think that everything that is mine is really theirs.

Scientist: ‘Arctic screaming’ about melting

From [CNN.com](http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/12/11/arctic.melt.ap/index.html:)

An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer, a warning sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point. One even speculated that summer sea ice would be gone in five years… This week, after reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said: “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”

This is quite alarming. If it’s true, we’re going to be in for some serious devistation.

Mac Word: Best Mac Ever?

From [MacCentral](http://www.macworld.com/:)

What’s the Best Mac Ever? Ask a hundred people and you’ll get about a hundred different answers.

Interesting question. I think I’d have to go with the Quadra 840 AV. It was one of the first home computers that supported voice recognition, audio and video processing out of the box, and it was just plain cool.
