Very nice love story set during the American Civil War.

I love it when movie makers take a classic story and reset, twist, and blurr it to hide where it actually came from.

In this case, the story is the Odyssey with a little bit of the Illiad thrown in for good measure.

The Civil War stands in as the Trojan War. The woman named Sara with the child that helps Inman is Calypso the mermaid. The civil war soldier that captures Inman and the other deserter as the cyclops, Ada Monroe as Penelope, Inman is Odysseus, Bosie as Antinous,
